Upcoming Superhero Movie Release Dates: From 2017 to 2020

There’s no denying that the most popular genre around these days is the superhero movie. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy proved that comic book adaptations could be just as dramatic and heavy as non-genre films, Marvel Studios jumpstarted a massive interconnected series of superhero movies that were significantly more colorful and humorous, and audiences have been turning out to both kinds of superhero films in droves. With nearly every major studio now working to turn its own comic book properties into the next big thing, and with Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. plotting out half a decade’s worth of material, it’s sometimes tough to keep track of what’s coming out when, who’s in it, and how it fits into the overall picture. Not to worry, though, because we here at Collider have you covered.
Below, you’ll find a comprehensive guide of superhero movie release dates for every major comic book adaptation on the calendar, going all the way up to the year 2020. Moreover, we’ll be updating this guide regularly with the most current information, so if you’re ever at a loss for when exactly Captain Marvel is supposed to be in theaters, you can come right back here for a quick refresher.

Wonder Woman

Release Date: June 2, 2017

Director: Patty Jenkins

Cast: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis.

What We Know So Far: Gadot made her first appearance as the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will appear in Justice League, but not before she gets her own standalone film, and a World War I one at that. This marks the first female-led superhero movie of the modern era, and it will fittingly be directed by a woman. However, while Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones veteran Michelle MacLaren was previously attached to direct, she departed over creative differences and Warner Bros. subsequently enlisted Monster helmer Jenkins, who herself was previously attached to Marvel’s Thor 2. Cast-wise, Pine plays Wonder Woman’s love interest Steve Trevor, a pilot who washes ashore on Diana Prince’s island paradise and tells her of the horrors of WWI happening in the outside world.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Release Date: July 7, 2017

Director: Jon Watts

Cast: Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, Tony Revolori, Robert Downey Jr., Logan Marshall Green, Angourie Rice, and Michael Keaton.

What We Know So Far: Few thought it would ever happen, but Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios came to an agreement in which they will be sharing the character of Spider-Man, with the webslinger first appearing in an MCU movie (Civil War) before getting his own rebooted film. Marvel is taking point creative on the picture, which will bring forth a younger Spidey who is still in high school. The Cabin in the Woods co-writer/director Drew Goddard was first rumored to take the helm, but Marvel eventually settled on Cop Car helmer Watts with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Vacation) writing the script. Michael Keaton is playing the film’s villain, Vulture, and Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark will further his relationship with the young webslinger after first appearing together in Captain America: Civil War. The film will have a tech-bent when it comes to the powers of Vulture and Spider-Man, and no, there will not be another origin story.

Thor: Ragnarok

Release Date: November 3, 2017

Director: Taika Waititi

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Idris Elba, and Anthony Hopkins.

What We Know So Far: The title most likely refers to the event from Nordic mythology in which catastrophic destruction comes to Asgard, submerging the entire world underwater and killing nearly every god. Marvel says the “Norse End of Days” is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve tapped What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi to take the helm, making for a very curious hire given his background in comedy. Cate Blanchett will be leading the villain charge as Hela, Tessa Thompson is Valkyrie, and Karl Urban is the villainous muscle Skurge, while the MCU is about to get a lot weirder with Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, one of the Elders of the Universe. The tone of the film is radically different from the previous Thor movies.

Justice League

Release Date: November 17, 2017

Director: Zack Snyder

Cast: Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Ezra Miller, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons, J.K. Simmons, Willem Dafoe, and Amber Heard.

What We Know So Far: Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated Justice League unites Affleck as Batman, and Adams as Lois Lane, along with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ezra Miller’s The Flash, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg. The villain of Justice League is Steppenwolf, who we saw Lex Luthor summoning in a deleted scene from Batman v Superman. As evidenced by the first footage, there certainly appears to be a lighter tone, and the film will broaden the DCEU so far with J.K. Simmons as the new Commissioner Gordon and Amber Heard as Aquaman character Mera. And Cavill’s Superman is in the mix here somewhere/somehow.

Black Panther

Release Date: February 16, 2018

Director: Ryan Coogler

Cast: Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Sterling K. Brown, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, and John Kani.

What We Know So Far: The comics character made quite the impression with his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, and he gets his own feature film not long after. 42 star Chadwick Boseman is filling the role of the powerful native of Wakanda, an African nation that is isolated from the rest of the world. Marvel says the crux of the film will be how this isolationist nation meets the world, so expect some friction. Selma director Ava DuVernay came close to signing on, but ultimately opted not to helm the film over concerns her artistic voice would be lost in the final product. Subsequently, Marvel hired Joe Robert Cole—who came up through the Marvel Studios writing program—to pen the script, and finally nabbed Creed and Fruitvale Station helmer Ryan Coogler to fill the director’s chair and co-write. He’s forging ahead with quite possibly the most exciting MCU film to date, and he announced his intention to fill out the cast with 90% African and African-American actors, already establishing a fantastic ensemble with the addition of Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Oyoke, and his Creed and Fruitvale star Michael B. Jordan as villain Erik Killmonger.

The story of Black Panther will find T’Challa returning to his technologically advanced homeland of Wakanda after the events of Civil War, only to find himself drawn into a dangerous conflict with an old enemy.

New Mutants

Release Date: April 13, 2018

Director: Josh Boone

Cast: TBA

What We Know So Far: Writer/director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) has been attached to direct New Mutants for some time now, but 20th Century Fox has finally confirmed the film with a spring 2018 release date. The cast is still under wraps, but the film is said to be YA-esque in tone, revolving around a group of much younger mutants in the X-Men universe than the adults from the proper X-Men movies. James McAvoy has been rumored to be reprising his role as Professor X in the film.

Avengers: Infinity War

Release Date: May 4, 2018

Directors: Joe and Anthony Russo

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: Marvel is finally tackling the Infinity War storyline, and it’ll take two films to tell it. The main antagonist will be Thanos (played by Josh Brolin), and the movie will no doubt unite many, many characters from the MCU. Moreover, Marvel adds that Avengers: Infinity War is the beginning of the culmination of everything that has come before. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been tapped to direct both parts of Infinity War, which will be shot at the same time during one long production beginning in late 2016. Moreover, they’ll shoot the entire movie using IMAX’s brand new digital cameras, meaning the whole film will be shot in IMAX. This two-part epic has been described as “the end of the Avengers team as we know it,” acting as a culmination of everything Marvel Studios had done since Iron Man. No pressure.

Deadpool 2

Release Date: June 1, 2018

Director: David Leitch

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Zazie Beets

What We Know So Far: While Deadpool director Tim Miller was originally supposed to return to helm Deadpool 2, he left the sequel in Fall 2016 over creative differences. Reynolds and 20th Century Fox subsequently set John Wick and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch to take over, but then came the long process of casting two major new roles. Domino, the female lead, went to Atlanta breakout Zazie Beets, while the casting of Cable proved as lengthy as it was complex. Names like Michael Shannon and David Harbour surfaced, and Brad Pitt at one point considered the role, but ultimately Josh Brolin is the one who signed on to play Deadpool’s favorite frenemy.

Ant-Man and the Wasp
Release Date: July 6, 2018

Director: Peyton Reed

Cast: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, and Michael Douglas.

What We Know So Far: Nothing, beyond a title and release date. But the title suggests that Evangeline Lily’s Wasp will be the co-star of this film and not just the “female lead”, making this Marvel Studios’ first release in which the heroine is in the title.

Aquaman

Release Date: December 21, 2018

Director: James Wan

Cast: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, and Willem Dafoe

What We Know So Far: Momoa made his first appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will be part of the Justice League ensemble. Warner Bros. has enlisted Furious 7 and The Conjuring helmer James Wan to direct, and after attempting to fast-track this thing to production with multiple screenwriters writing separate drafts, Wan and DC Films head Geoff Johns convened, nailed down the story, and have set Gangster Squad scribe Will Beall to pen the script. The ensemble cast includes Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna and Patrick Wilson as the film’s antagonist, Aquaman’s half-brother Orm.

Dark Phoenix
Release Date: November 2, 2018

Director: TBA

Cast: TBA

What We Know So Far: While films like Deadpool 2 and New Mutants moved forward in development, rumors surfaced that 20th Century Fox was also secretly working on the next proper X-Men film. Indeed, the sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse has been firmed up as Dark Phoenix, which will tackle the beloved Jean Grey story arc from the comics that was first broached (and botched) in X-Men: The Last Stand. X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg has penned the script and is reportedly hoping to direct the film, which one assumes would bring Sophie Turner back to reprise her Jean Grey role from Apocalypse. But as of right now all Fox will confirm is the title and release date.

Untitled Animated Spider-Man
Release Date: December 14, 2018

Directors: Bob Perschietti, Peter Ramsey

Cast: Shameik Moore and Liev Schrieber

What We Know So Far: Sony originated this animated Spider-Man movie with an idea by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, with Lord penning the script solo while the duo prepped their untitled Han Solo spinoff. This animated feature will kick off a new Spider-Man franchise different from the live-action one, but the kicker is that the Spider-Man of this movie is the black Miles Morales, not Peter Parker. Which means we’ll get our first non-white Spider-Man in 2018. Dope standout Shameik Moore has been set to voice Spidey, while Liev Schreiber is playing the film’s villain—although character details are under wraps. Schreiber, however, has teased that the film has a throwback tone.

Untitled Fox/Marvel Film

Release Date: February 24, 2019

Director: TBD

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: What kind of superhero movie gets released on Valentine’s Day? In 2016 that was Deadpool, so perhaps the long-awaited sequel won’t be hitting theaters for two years. Or maybe this is a different kind of X-Men spinoff altogether. Right now we have no clue.

Captain Marvel

Release Date: March 8, 2019

Director: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck

Cast: Brie Larson

What We Know So Far: Marvel’s first female-led superhero film will revolve around the most powerful character in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. This iteration of Captain Marvel will focus on the character of Carol Danvers, whose adventures are earthbound but whose powers are based in the cosmic realm. Joss Whedon wanted to introduced the character at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Marvel didn’t want to bring Captain Marvel into the MCU fully formed without first telling her origin story. Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) are writing the screenplay, and Oscar-winning Room actress Brie Larson has been set to star. And after a lengthy director’s search, Marvel settled on Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

Shazam

Release Date: April 5, 2019

Director: TBD

Cast: Dwayne Johnson

What We Know So Far: Making his superhero movie debut, Dwayne Johnson opted to take on the role of the villainous Black Adam in this DC comics adaptation. However, this project is very nebulous and this release date hasn’t exactly been confirmed. Last we heard, Warner Bros. is mulling over splitting this into two movies: Shazam and Black Adam.

Untitled Avengers Sequel

Release Date: May 3, 2019

Directors: Joe and Anthony Russo

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: The conclusion to the epic two-part Avengers storyline will close out Marvel’s ambitious Phase Three with a bang. And the real title is a spoiler.

Justice League Part Two

Release Date: June 14, 2019

Director: Zack Snyder (?)

Cast: Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Amy Adams.

What We Know So Far: While Warner Bros. initially announced Justice League in two parts, everything’s up in the air now due to restructuring with regards to DC Films and response to Batman v Superman. Director Zack Snyder has stressed that as of now, they’re only focused on making Justice League, so it’s possible a different film will take this date.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 2
Release Date: July 5, 2019

Director: TBD

Cast: Tom Holland

What We Know So Far: Nothing, but obviously Sony and Marvel Studios plan on Spider-Man: Homecoming launching a franchise, and Sony has already slated the sequel to hit theaters in two years.

Untitled DC Film

Release Date: November 1, 2019

Director: TBA

Cast: TBA

What We Know So Far: Nothing at all, but it’s possible that this is either a new release date for an existing DC film or a sequel to Suicide Squad or Batman v Superman. Warner Bros. has finally gotten Ben Affleck to agree to direct and star in a Batman standalone called The Batman, and with Affleck having penned a script with Geoff Johns, that seems like an inevitability at this point. But which will come first, Suicide Squad 2 or Batman?

Cyborg

Release Date: April 3, 2020

Director: TBD

Cast: Ray Fisher

What We Know So Far: Fisher will first be introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and then will play a role in the two Justice League films.

Green Lantern Corps

Release Date: June 19, 2020

Director: TBD

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: This will be a reboot of the Warner Bros. franchise so Ryan Reynolds is not expected to reprise his role—plus he’s also busy being Deadpool for Fox. Green Lantern is rumored to make his first appearance at the end of either Justice League Part One or Justice League Part Two when he warns the team that Darkseid is on his way to bring destruction to Earth. But the title of the reboot tells us this will be a team-up film featuring two Green Lanterns. Tyrese Gibson has been openly campaigning for one of the roles, as the film will find Hal Jordan and John Stewart in a Lethal Weapon-type situation. Warner Bros. recently kicked the tires on this one, hiring David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel) to co-write the script with Justin Rhodes.

Untitled Marvel Movie

Release Date: August 7, 2020

Director: TBA

Cast: TBA

What We Know So Far: Nothing, since we don’t know what this movie is yet. But Marvel has confirmed that James Gunn is returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so this could be a placeholder for that. Or perhaps it’s a different film altogether that we don’t know about yet.

The Flash

Release Date: TBA

Director: TBA

Cast: Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Kiersey Clemons, and Billy Crudup

What We Know So Far: Miller made his brief debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but he’s a fully fledge star of the Justice League. After tasking Phil Lord and Chris Miller with penning a treatment only to see them head off to direct the Han Solo Star Wars film, the studio subsequently tapped Seth Grahame-Smith to make his directorial debut on the superhero picture. Alas, after the disappointing reception to Batman v Superman, Warner Bros. opted to change course and parted ways with Grahame-Smith, seeking to find a more established filmmaker in his stead. They settled on Dope filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa, working from Grahame-Smith’s script that will be a buddy film of sorts between Flash and Cyborg, but after months of developing the project and with casting underway (Dope standout Kiersey Clemons landed the role of Iris West), Famuyiwa exited the project in late October.

This now puts the March 2018 release date in doubt, as it was dependent upon production getting underway in early 2017. Now, Miller is due to start filming Fantastic Beasts 2 in mid-2017, which would push production of The Flash to late 2017 or early 2018, meaning the March 2018 date is now pretty much impossible. Not to mention the fact that this movie still doesn’t have a director.

Gambit

Release Date: TBD

Director: TBD

Cast: Channing Tatum

What We Know So Far: Tatum has been keen on playing the X-Men mutant for a while now, and 20th Century Fox finally pulled the trigger on a standalone movie for the fan-favorite Cajun. Production had initially been slated to begin Fall 2015, but when it was pushed back to early 2016, director Rupert Wyatt abruptly dropped out due to personal reasons. Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) subsequently signed on to direct, and while producer Simon Kinberg told us the film will be a heist picture and a “sexy thriller”, the film was pulled from its October 2016 release date and is now listed as TBD. Moreover, due to the delays, Liman has since departed to helm Warner Bros.’ Justice League Dark movie.

Inhumans

Release Date: TBD

Director: TBD

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: Another comic property that will push the reach of the Marvel Cinematic Universe further outward, Inhumans will introduce dozens of new characters to the MCU. In the comics, they are a race of superhumans whose origins lie in the war between the alien Skrull and Kree races. The existence of Inhumans has been first introduced on ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and now ABC and Marvel are teaming up on an Inhumans TV series, although the official line is that this doesn’t replace the feature film. Still, the Inhumans movie seems like a ways off.

Justice League Dark

Release Date: TBD

Director: Doug Liman

Cast: TBD

What We Know So Far: Warner Bros. has been developing an adaptation of Justice League Dark for awhile now, with Guillermo del Toro first writing a script a few years ago before departing the project. But with the DCEU now up and running, Edge of Tomorrow and The Bourne Identity helmer Doug Liman signed on to direct in August 2016 as the film now appears to be barreling right ahead. WB is eyeing an A-List ensemble for the pic, which focuses on the DC superheroes with more supernatural powers as opposed to the bright and shiny heroes of the Justice League proper. The protagonists of Justice League Dark aren’t exactly antiheroes either, as the comics lineup has included folks like John Constantine and Swamp Thing.

Tinubu set to reveal how APC triumphed in 2015 polls

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is set to launch his memoirs on the 2015 election, The Punch reports.

Tinubu disclosed this on Friday, April 29 in Lagos through his media aide, Tunde Rahman, who represented him at the book launch of “Against the Run of Play”, a book authored by veteran journalist, Olusegun Adeniyi.

Tinubu stated that he was working on a book that would detail how his party removed former President Goodluck Jonathan from office.

Tinubu says he is working on his own memoirs as regards the 2015 elections
The former governor of Lagos played an instrumental role in the merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change and All Nigeria Peoples Party to form the APC that presented President Muhammadu Buhari as candidate in 2015.

Buhari went on to defeat then incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan, in what became the first power transition from one politcal party to another in Nigeria’s young democracy.

He said people should not dwell on his loss of the vice-presidential seat but on the achievements of Osinbajo, whom he had nominated for the position.

His words: “Some have said that they will tell their story, Asiwaju is also working on his own book to tell his account of what transpired.

“To tell how he was able to mould the APC to the extent that it was able to unseat an incumbent president for the first time in the history of our contemporary politics.

“The account of what transpired as told by Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the book and as presented in some newspapers is not about him losing the vice-presidency and the eventual vice-president emerging, as the reviewer has put it.

“Asiwaju spoke in greater context in that book, and when people are making comments, they should speak with the context in which he spoke. If they are saying that Asiwaju lost the vice-presidency and that a vice-president emerged, where did he emerge from? Who nominated the vice-president?

“I’d like to say that even the vice-president has said on some occasions that a certain political leader from the South-West nominated him for the job and we all know who that is.

“That nomination has been a very good choice from all the wonderful things the vice-president has been doing.”

Tinubu was instrumental to the APC defeating the then incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan
Meanwhile, a former governor of Niger state, Babangida Aliyu has revealed why the North opposed Jonathan’s re-election bid in 2015.

Aliyu said the North backed out because Jonathan reneged on his promise to govern for only one term of four years.

Ajagun NLA hits the stage

Ajagun Nla, a play written by Ladepo Duro-Ladipo is on the 19th century Yoruba wars fought between Ibadan and the combined forces of Oyo and Ile-Ife. It was staged during the Easter period to draw attention to the numerous problems bedeviling the nation at the moment, writes Edozie Udeze

The scenes created by the 19th century Yoruba wars can never cease to amaze the world. The wars have generated lots of drama and theatre pieces that each time they are shown on stage, there are usually new things to learn and glimpse from them. The play Ajagun Nla written by Ladepo Duro-Ladipo which was shown during the Easter holiday is also one of those striking features of what theatre can do to make a historical event register in the minds of thespians.

Even though the play opened with the actors and actresses appearing from different angles of the stage, pouring encomiums on some Nigerian and African people who did their best to make the society better, the play itself essentially dwelt on the role of Ibadan warriors in the 19th century Yoruba wars.  Oyo Empire was under siege. The people were daily being tormented by Ibadan warlords. The market places had been shut down. People were being strangled to death on their ways to their farms, to the streams. Even at home, most of the people were not safe. Fear; great fear of the unknown that ruptured the community became a greater albatross. What then could they do?

At this point, Oranmiyan, the Alaafin of Oyo summoned his chiefs and soldiers. “What is the option now?” he asked them all. With one voice, they all agreed to send for Ajagunla , one of Oranmiyan’s brothers in Ile-Ife. A brave warrior, tall and fearless, Ajagunla was known for his great exploits.  He was feared by his friends and foes alike. He never embarked on an unfinished battle.

His charms and war tactics spoke volumes.  And so on arrival, Oranmiyan did not waste time in telling him why he was summoned.  “But why did you allow the situation to get so bad, brother?” he asked Oranmiyan. As he was handed over the staff of authority and power to prosecute the war, Ajagunla immediately became possessed. He raised the staff and shouted; “here, death to our enemies; to the enemies of Ile-Ife and Oyo. I will pursue them until there is no more life left in them,” he vowed.

With intermittent sounds of drumming and dances, the play showed the combined forces of Ile-Ife and Oyo routing Ibadan forces. The fierce battle produced death on both sides, but in the end Ajagunla triumphed. As he did so, he also created enemies within. Some of his trusted chiefs began to plot his downfall. One of them gave his daughter to him as wife. It was the same woman who attempted to ruin Ajagunla. Even though she did not succeed, she was nonetheless able to usher in moments of fear, mistrust, doubts, suspicion and loss of moral amongst the ranks and files of

Ajagunla’s soldiers.

In the meantime, Ibadan devised a more dubious style to torment Ajagunla. By now, Ajagunla’s war prowess, his strong charms and so on had begun to lose their potency. With assortment of masquerade spirits placed in uncouth forms in the warfront, Ibadan people were able to demystify Ajagunla .  As he made to pass, they stabbed him in the back. Even though he finished them all, the poison in the spear penetrated his system.  He struggled in vain to overcome the pain. As he did so, his wives appeared on the stage to beg him not to die.

“A hero, a warlord, does not die in the warfront,” he echoed.  “Neither does he go back home. He only disappears to join his ancestors”.  As he moved out into the inner part of the stage, he raised his staff to disappear into the world of the unknown.

Done in English and Yoruba languages,

Ajagunla demonstrates the story of one man who loves his people; a man who volunteers to abandon his own cozy lifestyle in a settled kingdom to save others. The zeal with which he fought the war showed that a leader can always emerge in the midst of confusion and crisis to liberate his people.

In order to make the play more engrossing on stage, the director, Sina Ayodele used dances and drumming to embellish it. The drumming zeroed into the nuances of the people. The dances also showed a Yorubaland of the 19th century when people were not as civilized as they are today. More so, the costumes depicted typical rural people of the period in question. From very rudimental designed fabrics, the costumes were done to suit the exigencies of the show. Each artiste was made to fit into an old scene where and when people hardly left their domains. As they sang and danced, people’s minds flashed back into time when fear ruled the lives of many.

This was why also the stage was designed to synchronize with the play. Done by Biodun Abe, the artistic director of Abuja Carnival and one of Nigeria’s foremost stage designers, the stage was rolled back into the 19th century rural environment. The rocks were made prominent. In the deep background, were footpaths leading to the farms and to the streams. They were also footpaths used by soldiers to trace their enemies and consequently made the wars possible.

Indeed the beauty of the stage design helped to drive home the message. On the elevated platform sat the Kabiyeisi (Oranmiyan).  On both sides of him were his trusted chiefs.  The rest of the stage was made available for the main body of the play. On no account did any artiste invade or interfere with the platform meant for the Oba. This is usually how it goes with a traditional stage setting done by someone who is truly at home with his people and what they stand for. Abe is gifted in this manner and so as always, he sticks to this traditional style to give his stage designs that aura and euphoria that distinguishes him from the rest.

The play showed the sense in presenting a story that harps on the need to have committed leaders in present-day Nigeria. Ladepo, son of the legendary Duro Ladipo who wrote the play was careful in selecting scenes that represent some on-going events in the society. The wars or the reasons for the crisis of yester year, can also be the reason for the confusion or the mistrust of today.

In making it a two-hour piece, Ayodele, the director of the play, opined that it was necessary in order to make the message more elaborate. “The message has to stick so that the audience would have something to go home with.”  Also the large cast was to show the total symbolism of the story itself and what ought to be done to eliminate wastes and build on the foundation of trust and commitment and love.

Held at the National Theatre, Lagos, Ajagunla attracted theatre lovers from far and near. The play brought out the roles Obatala, Orunmila, Sango, Ogun and Esu play in the lives of the people.  Even when the Ifa priest warned that the people should remain united in love to avoid the role of Esu, he was not taken serious. And it was the same Esu that put a knife in the midst of the people and divided them into different camps and groups. As he did so, hatred and undue rivalry became permanent in the lives of the people. The lesson to be learnt here is enormous. Even now, Esu still goes to where there is peace to sow seeds of disharmony, mistrust and death. Some of the artistes in the play include Tunji Sotimirin, Yemi Solade, Seyi Fasuyi and others.

We must never forget our culture, heritage, says Olabanji-Oba

“We must never forget our heritage. It is who we are; it is our pride. Without history, we don’t have so much to look up to for the future, because we are all our history of where we are from,” says Hon. Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, one of the leading female voices for the girl-child empowerment and community development in Lagos, especially in Ikorodu. She noted that culture is imperative for development, adding that it is what defines us as a people.

“If you don’t celebrate your heritage, you truly have no identity. What is there about you to celebrate? For me, every day I wake up, I thank God for my heritage.

I am proud to say this is my history, so aligning myself with that history gives me greater hope for the future and to say: ‘My forebears did it to this level, I am also contributing this; my children and children’s children tomorrow, will also say, my grandma and my great-grandma did this.

So, life is like a baton you pass on, but you must put it in a positive way. And that is why I am very passionate about Ikorodu,” she said. According to her, as a person, you are a living testimony.

“Most times, people don’t have to follow you to your house. Your way of life, the standard that you set, speak a lot about you if you have that real family values and orientation. Some of my friends, they tease me, before they say anything they won’t even call my name, Princess, they will say ‘Ikorodu.’ I laugh, and say so Ikorodu is my name? Their responses are:

You, everything, Ikorodu, Ikorodu Oga, Ikorodu Unlimited. And when they say that, once I hear Ikorodu Unlimited, it puts a smile on my face, because it is saying, I am this, and I am not ashamed of where I come from. I love my people so much from the bottom of my heart.

And no one is an island; it is not something that only one person can do. It is something for which we all have to join hands and be true ambassadors of our home land.”

A real estate and brokerage expert, and founder of an NGO ‘Shelter of Grace Foundation’ (SGF), Olabanji-Oba, who is seeking election as chairman of Ikorodu Central Local Government Area on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also stressed the need for teaching of history in our schools.

“It is very important that we teach our children history. That is one thing I celebrate my grandma for, she had a lot of influence on me too. She taught me a lot. Now, my children, before I say two things, I tell them proverbs, I tell them about our culture.

And I am proud to say so many things to them because I took time to learn; and those things I learnt in my formative years have helped me a lot.

“The technology that we have today should be major enhancer, not things that can expose us to dangers that are out there. So, history is very important.

When we learn who we are, how we were, it helps realize where we are today. And it makes us plan even better in regard to how tomorrow can be greater. Also, the language is a must.

And, I know even my husband will say I am an Igbo woman in Yoruba body, because I was raised to see Nigeria as one. I speak the three major languages – Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.

So, that Wazobia attitude needs to be imbibed also in our children,” she said. On her love and passion for community development, helping the less-privileged, promoting peaceful co-existence, industry among others, she said:

“I am a child that was raised with so much love, and so giving love is all I really know how to do. I thank God for the lives of my parents of blessed memory, they are both gone.

My mother was one very strong factor in my life. She taught me that ‘you’ve got to prioritize, give your best diligently, in any community you find yourself.’ And she will tell you, ‘a good name is priceless above rubies and diamonds. And living a life of integrity is sacrosanct.

There is no excuse. She wasn’t privileged to go to school so much, but she was somebody that believed so much in education, and also believed that whether you are a boy or a girl, it doesn’t matter.

I am her first daughter, and I know that my father at that time was like ‘he needed a boy’ and so on. I just thank God that before he died I proved him wrong, that boy-child, girl -child, it depends on what you put into that child.

Before my father died, he used to call me ‘Okurin mewa’ not even ‘Obirin’ (girl) anymore, because he saw the heart that I have and he was ever so proud of me.

“And now that they are gone, I know t h e i r spirit lives on; and I want them to be so proud of me, wherever they are, to say: ‘I have left a good child that will also bless their world tremendously.

And I think that is what life is all about. We are here for all of us; we should be our best brother’s, our best sister’s keeper; watch out for each other; and know that nobody is an island.

And whatever you do, give it your best; and also invest in yourself. The ‘you’ of today must be better than the ‘you’ of yesterday; so your ‘you’ of tomorrow must also be better than your ‘you’ of today.” She stated that she was born in Lagos Island, Isale Eko, and had beautiful experience.

“My orientation like I said, comes with a big smile every time I think about my parenting, the love and support from my parents. I went to school in Adeola Model School, Offa, Kwara State.

I went to Federal Government Girls College, Owerri in Imo State for my ‘O levels’. I had my ‘A levels’ at King Language School, and then the American College for my first degree. I took some courses in business and marketing at West London College, before going on to the United States of America.

And I was in insurance first, from insurance into real estate. And before I relocated to Nigeria in 2006, I was licensed as a mortgage broker and banker in California and Texas to do mortgage and real estate. Coming back to Nigeria, I set up a real estate firm, Pacific Capital. That is pretty much what I do. I have a foundation, called Shelter of Grace Foundation that takes care of women and youths.

I believe in training, empowerment; so far we have trained over 5500, in different vocations and skills. I am doing this not because I am rich but I believe that at whatever level the society has nurtured you, now it is about you giving back. “My going into politics also stems from that. I just believe that politics means relevance.

If I am able to help my people more to influence things, to create a better enabling ground for them, I think I can be a happier person.

So, for Ikorodu, the love of my mum, the love that my mum also had for this community, Ikorodu, who even before she died made me promise her to take care of her people, yes my people.”

156 children, teenagers abused sexually from 2014 till date

Dr Ekaete Umor, the Medical Officer, Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), Minna, on Wednesday said 156 children and teenagers were abused from August 2014 to date.

Umor made this known in an interview with newsmen in Minna.

“I can confirm to you that in 2014, from August to December, 14 cases of sexual assault were reported; in 2015, between January and December, 60 cases were reported.

“Also, from January to December, 2016, 61 cases were reported, while 21 cases of rape have so far been reported from January, 2017 till date,’’ she said.

forced sex

Umor said that about 20 per cent of the figures reported were males, while the rest were females.

The medical officer said that the incidence of sexual harassment was becoming alarming in Niger, especially as people were taking advantage of the vulnerability of children.

She said that the cases were under-reported.

“The cases in Niger are likely to be more than the figures reported, perhaps because of fear, the personalities involved and to protect the families’ name.

“The families are also afraid of stigmatisation and the shame that when such an allegation is associated to a girl, it might make her to be bullied in school and also affect her prospects of marriage.

“Some of the rapists are even the fathers or step-fathers of the girls.

“Most of the cases are repeated; some children have been abused twice, thrice and more, while some of these vulnerable children were abused when they were hawking.

“We cannot ask them not to engage in economic activities for their parents; we advise that they should do it in groups,’’ she said.

According to her, if they hawk in groups, somebody among them will raise alarm when somebody tries to lure any of them away.

Umor advised mothers to be watchful as family members could also be involved in assaulting their children.

“There was a recent case we had, an uncle raped his four year old niece and she almost bled to death; a lot of suturing had to be done.

“The child lost a lot of blood and she had to go through a lot of blood transfusion.

“The case was reported here, but the family members said they will settle the matter at home.

“They were afraid of the stigma and shame it will bring to the girl and the family at large.

“We have had cases of fathers raping daughters, while some were step-fathers raping their step-daughters,’’ she said.

Also, Mr David Yisa, the centre Coordinator, appealed to parents to stop their children from hawking and running errands at night.

He said that until the ugly scourge of sexual assault was completely stamped out of our society, the centre would continue to sensitise people on factors that predispose them to being victims.

A short biography of Donald Trump

Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessman, television personality, politician, and the 45th President of the United States. He assumed office on January 20, 2017.

Born and raised in Queens, New York City, Trump received an economics degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. In 1971, he took charge of his family’s real estate and construction firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son, which was later renamed The Trump Organization. During his business career, Trump has built, renovated, and managed numerous office towers, hotels, casinos, and golf courses. He owned the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants from 1996 to 2015, and has lent the use of his name in the branding of various products. From 2004 to 2015, he hosted The Apprentice, a reality television series on NBC. As of 2016, Forbes listed him as the 324th wealthiest person in the world and 113th richest in the United States, with a net worth of $4.5 billion.

Trump sought the Reform Party’s presidential nomination in 2000, but withdrew before voting began. He considered running as a Republican for the 2012 election, but ultimately decided against it. In June 2015, he announced his candidacy for the 2016 election, and quickly emerged as the front-runner among 17 contenders in the Republican primaries. His final opponents suspended their campaigns in May 2016, and in July he was formally nominated at the Republican Convention along with Mike Pence as his running mate. His campaign received unprecedented media coverage and international attention. Many of his statements in interviews, on social media, and at campaign rallies were controversial or false.

Trump won the general election on November 8, 2016, in a surprise victory against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. At age 70, he became the oldest and wealthiest person to assume the presidency, the first without prior military or governmental service, and the fifth elected with less than a plurality of the national popular vote.

Trump’s platform emphasizes renegotiating U.S.–China relations and free trade agreements such as NAFTA and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, strongly enforcing immigration laws, and building a new wall along the U.S.–Mexico border. His other positions include pursuing energy independence while opposing climate change regulations such as the Clean Power Plan and the Paris Agreement, modernizing and expediting services for veterans, repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, abolishing Common Core education standards, investing in infrastructure, simplifying the tax code while reducing taxes for all economic classes, and imposing tariffs on imports by companies offshoring jobs. He advocates a largely non-interventionist approach to foreign policy while increasing military spending, “extreme vetting” of immigrants from Muslim-majority countries to preempt domestic Islamic terrorism, and aggressive military action against ISIL. His positions have been described by scholars and commentators as populist, protectionist, and nationalist.

Donald Trump’s Biography

Early life

Further information: Trump family

Trump was born on June 14, 1946, at the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York City. He was the fourth of five children born to Frederick Christ “Fred” Trump (1905–1999) and Mary Anne Trump (née MacLeod, 1912–2000).[2][3]His siblings are Maryanne, Fred Jr., Elizabeth, and Robert. Trump’s older brother Fred Jr. died in 1981 from alcoholism, which Trump says led him to abstain from alcohol and cigarettes.[4]

Ancestry

Trump is of paternal German ancestry and maternal Scottish ancestry. His mother and all his grandparents were born in Europe. His paternal grandparents were immigrants from Kallstadt, Germany, and his father, who became a New York City real estate developer, was born in the Bronx.[5][6]His mother emigrated to New York (where she worked as a maid) from her birthplace of Tong, Lewis, Scotland.[7]Fred and Mary met in New York and married in 1936, raising their family in Queens.[7][8]

His uncle, John G. Trump, a professor at MIT from 1936 to 1973, was involved in radar research for the Allies in the Second World War, and helped design X-ray machines that prolonged the lives of cancer patients; in 1943, the Federal Bureau of Investigation requested John Trump examine Nikola Tesla‘s papers and equipment when Tesla died in his room at the New Yorker Hotel.[9] Donald Trump’s grandfather was Frederick Trump, who amassed a fortune operating boom-town restaurants and boarding houses in the region of Seattle and Klondike, Canada.[10]

The Trump family were originally Lutherans, but Trump’s parents belonged to the Reformed Church in America.[11] The family name, which was formerly spelled Drumpf, was changed to Trump during the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century.[12] Trump has said that he is proud of his German heritage; he served as grand marshal of the 1999 German-American Steuben Parade in New York City.[13]

Education

Trump’s family had a two-story mock Tudor home on Midland Parkway in Jamaica Estates, where he lived while attending The Kew-Forest School.[16][17]He left the school at age 13 and was enrolled in the New York Military Academy (NYMA),[18] in Cornwall, New York, where he finished eighth grade and high school. Trump was an energetic child; his parents hoped that the discipline at the military school would allow him to channel his energy in a positive manner. In 1983, Fred Trump told an interviewer that Donald “was a pretty rough fellow when he was small”.[19]

Trump participated in marching drills, wore a uniform, and during his senior year attained the rank of captain. He was transferred from a student command position after the alleged hazing of a new freshman in his barracks by one of Trump’s subordinates; Trump later described the transfer as “a promotion”.[20] In 2015, he told a biographer that NYMA gave him “more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military”.[21]

Trump attended Fordham University in the Bronx for two years, beginning in August 1964. He then transferred to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, which offered one of the few real estate studies departments in United States academia at the time.[22][23] While there, he worked at the family’s company, Elizabeth Trump & Son, named for his paternal grandmother.[24] He graduated from Penn in May 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.[23][25][26]

Trump was not drafted during the Vietnam War.[27] While in college from 1964 to 1968, he obtained four student deferments.[28] In 1966, he was deemed fit for service based upon a military medical examination, and in 1968 was briefly classified as fit by a local draft board, but was given a 1-Y medical deferment in October 1968.[29] In an interview for a 2015 biography, he attributed his medical deferment to heel spurs.[21] In 1969, he received a high number in the draft lottery, which would also have likely exempted him from service.[29][30][31]

Trump has five children by three marriages, and has eight grandchildren.[32][33] His first two marriages ended in widely publicized divorces.[34]

Trump married his first wife, Czech model Ivana Zelníčková, on April 7, 1977, at the Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan[35] in a ceremony performed by one of America’s most famous ministers, the Reverend Norman Vincent Peale.[36] They had three children: son Donald Jr. (born December 31, 1977), daughter Ivanka (born October 30, 1981), and son Eric (born January 6, 1984). Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric now serve as executive vice presidents of The Trump Organization.[37] Ivana became a naturalized United States citizen in 1988.[38]

Trump has been nicknamed “The Donald” since Ivana referred to him as such in a 1989 Spy magazine cover story.[39][40] By early 1990, the tabloid press was commenting on trouble in Trump’s marriage and reporting his affair with actress Marla Maples.[41][42][43] Ivana Trump was granted an uncontested divorce in 1990, on the grounds that Trump’s treatment of her, such as his affair with Maples, had been “cruel and inhuman”.[44][45] In 1992, he successfully sued Ivana for violating a gag clause in their divorce agreement by disclosing facts about him in her book.[46][47][48] In 2015, Ivana said that she and Donald “are the best of friends”.[49]

Maples gave birth to their daughter Tiffany, named after Tiffany & Company(Trump’s purchase of the air rights above the store in the 1980s allowed him to build Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue), on October 13, 1993.[50] They married two months later on December 20, 1993.[51] The couple formally separated in May 1997,[52] with their divorce finalized in June 1999.[53][54]Maples raised Tiffany as a single mother in Calabasas, California, where they lived until Tiffany’s graduation from Viewpoint School.[55] In a February 2009 interview, Trump commented that his commitment to his business had made it difficult for his first two wives to compete with his affection for work.[56]

The President and First Lady at the Liberty Ball on Inauguration Day

In 1998, Trump began a relationship with Slovene model Melania Knauss, who became his third wife.[57][58] They were engaged in April 2004[59] and were married on January 22, 2005, at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, on the island of Palm Beach, Florida, followed by a reception at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.[60][61][62] In 2006, Melania became a naturalized United States citizen,[58] and gave birth to their son Barron on March 20, 2006.[63][64] Having heard the language since his birth, Barron is fluent in Slovene.[65]

Trump’s brother, Fred Jr., predeceased their father Fred. Shortly after the latter died in 1999, the wife of Fred Jr.’s son gave birth to a son with serious medical problems. Trump and his family offered to pay the medical bills through Fred Sr.’s company (Fred Sr. had freely provided medical coverage to his family through his company for decades).[66]Fred III then sued the family for allegedly having used “undue influence” on a dementia-stricken Fred Sr. to get Fred III and his sister Mary a reduced share from their grandfather’s will, but Trump attributed the reduced share to his father’s dislike of Fred III’s mother, and Trump stopped the aid for Fred III’s son. The aid was resumed by court order pending outcome of the lawsuit, which was then settled.[67][68]

Religious views

Trump identifies as Presbyterian.[69] As a child, he began going to church at the First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, Queens.[70] He attended Sunday schooland had his confirmation at that church.[70] Trump said in 2015 that he attends Reformed Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan, where he married his first wife Ivana in 1977, although he is not an “active member”.[70] He is also loosely affiliated with Lakeside Presbyterian Church in West Palm Beach, Florida, near his Mar-a-Lagoestate.[71] Trump said that although he participates in Holy Communion, he has not asked God for forgiveness for his sins, stating: “I think if I do something wrong, I just try and make it right. I don’t bring God into that picture.”[72]

In December 2016, Trump visited Bethesda-by-the-Sea, an Episcopalchurch for Christmas services.[73]

Trump calls his own book The Art of the Deal “my second favorite book of all time, after the Bible. Nothing beats the Bible”.[74][75] In a speech to Liberty University, he referred to Second Corinthians as “Two Corinthians”, eliciting chuckles from the audience.[76]Still, The New York Times reported that Evangelical Christians nationwide thought “that his heart was in the right place, that his intentions for the country were pure”.[77]

Outside of his church affiliations, Trump has relationships with a number of Christian spiritual leaders, including Florida pastor Paula White, who has been described as his “closest spiritual confidant.”[78] In 2015, he asked for and received a blessing from Greek Orthodox priest Emmanuel Lemelson[79]and, in 2016, released a list of his religious advisers, including James DobsonJerry Falwell Jr.Ralph Reedand others.[80]

Referring to his daughter Ivanka‘s conversion to Judaism before her marriage to Jared Kushner, Trump said in 2015: “I have a Jewish daughter; and I am very honored by that […] it wasn’t in the plan but I am very glad it happened.”[81]

Health

A 2016 medical report by his doctor, Harold Bornstein M.D., showed that Trump’s blood pressure, liver and thyroid function were in normal range.[82][83] Trump says that he has never smoked cigarettes or consumed other drugs, including marijuana.[84] He also does not drink alcohol, a decision stemming from his brother’s death caused by alcoholism.[4][85][86][87]

Foundation

Main article: Donald J. Trump Foundation

The Donald J. Trump Foundation is a U.S.-based private foundation[88]established in 1988 for the initial purpose of giving away proceeds from the book Trump: The Art of the Deal by Trump and Tony Schwartz.[89][90] The foundation’s funds have mostly come from donors other than Trump,[91] who has not given personally to the charity since 2008.[91] In 2016, investigations by The Washington Post uncovered several potential legal and ethical violations conducted by the charity, including alleged self-dealing and possible tax evasion.[92] After beginning an investigation into the foundation, the New York State Attorney General‘s office notified the Trump Foundation that it was allegedly in violation of New York laws regarding charities, and ordered it to immediately cease its fundraising activities in New York.[93][94][95] A Trump spokesman called the investigation a “partisan hit job”.[93]

The foundation’s tax returns show that it has given to health care and sports-related charities, as well as conservative groups.[96] In 2009, for example, the foundation gave $926,750 to about 40 groups, with the biggest donations going to the Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation ($100,000), the New York–Presbyterian Hospital ($125,000), the Police Athletic League ($156,000), and the Clinton Foundation($100,000).[97][98] From 2004 to 2014, the top donors to the foundation were Vince and Linda McMahon of WWE, who donated $5 million to the foundation after Trump appeared at WrestleMania in 2007.[91] After winning the presidency, Trump announced his intention to give Linda McMahon a cabinet-level position in his administration, as Administrator of the Small Business Administration.[99] In response to mounting complaints, Trump’s team announced in late December 2016 that the Trump Foundation would be dissolved to remove “even the appearance of any conflict with [his] role as President”.[100]

Legal affairs

An analysis by USA Today, published in June 2016, found that over the previous three decades, Trump and his businesses had been involved in 3,500 legal cases in U.S. federal courts and state courts, an unprecedented number for a U.S. presidential candidate.[101] Of the 3,500 suits, mostly in the casinoindustry, Trump or one of his companies was the plaintiff in 1,900; defendant in 1,450; and third party, filer of bankruptcy, or other in 150.[101] Trump was named in at least 169 suits in federal court.[102] Although litigation over contract disputes and other matters is common in the real estate industry,[103] USA Today found that Trump had been involved in more legal disputes than Edward J. DeBartolo Jr.Donald BrenStephen M. RossSam Zell, and Larry Silverstein combined. In about 500 cases, judges dismissed plaintiffs’ claims against Trump. Hundreds of cases have ended with the available public record unclear about the resolution,[101] but where there was a clear resolution, he has won 451 times and lost 38.[104]

1980s

In 1985, Trump was sued by both the State of New York and the City of New York for allegedly trying to force out tenants to enable demolition.[105] The matter was settled and the demolition canceled.[106] In 1988, Trump paid $750,000 to settle the civil penalties in an antitrust lawsuit stemming from stock purchases.[107]

1990s

In 1991, a business analyst predicted that the Trump Taj Mahal would soon fail, and he then lost his job; the analyst sued Trump for allegedly having an unlawful role in the firing, and that matter was settled confidentially out of court.[108] After a helicopter crashed, killing three executives of his New Jersey hotel casino business, Trump sued the manufacturers.[109] That case was dismissed.[110] Trump Plaza was fined $200,000 by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission for moving African-American and female employees away from a racist and sexist gambler to accommodate him, but Trump was not evidently investigated, nor held personally liable, and said he would not even recognize that gambler.[111] In 1991, Trump’s father, Fred Trump, made an unlawful loan to Trump’s Castle to help it make a mortgage payment, and the casino was required to pay a $30,000 fine, but his son was not penalized.[112]

In 1993, Trump sued his business partner Jay Pritzker for allegedly collecting excessive fees, and the matter was settled.[113][114][115] Boarding house owner Vera Coking sued for damage during construction of an adjacent casino, and later dropped the suit against Trump while settling with his contractor; she also prevailed against Trump and other developers in an eminent domain case.[116][117][118]

In 1997, Trump and rival Atlantic City casino owner Stephen Wynn engaged in an extended legal conflict during the planning phase of new casinos Wynn had proposed to build, and the cases were settled.[119][120][121]

2000s

In 2000, Trump was charged with lobbying for government rejection of proposed casinos that would compete with his casinos, and he paid $250,000 to settle resulting fines.[122][123] The charges related to a proposed Native American-run casino in the Catskills, New York, which would have competed with three of Trump’s casinos in Atlantic City.[124]

When the Securities and Exchange Commission charged one of his companies with poor financial reporting, Trump’s attorney said the culprit had been dismissed, and that Trump had personally been unaware of the matter.[125][126][127] Following litigation with Leona Helmsley that started in the 1990s regarding control of the Empire State Building,[128][129] Trump in 2002 sold his share in that building to rivals of Helmsley’s.[130][131]

In 2004 Trump sued former business partner Richard Fields for allegedly saying he still consulted for Trump. Fields counter-sued,[132][133][134][135] and the lawsuit was dismissed.[136]

The town of Palm Beach, Florida fined Trump for building an 80-foot (24-meter) pole for the American flag at his Mar-a-Lago property. Trump then sued, and a settlement required him to donate $100,000 to veterans’ charities, while the town agreed to let him enroll out-of-towners in his social club and permitted a 10-foot shorter flagpole elsewhere on his lawn.[137]

When the California city of Rancho Palos Verdes thwarted luxury home development on a landslide-prone area owned by Trump, he sued,[138] and the city agreed to permit extensions for 20 more proposed luxury homes.[139][140]

Trump sued a law firm he had used, Morrison Cohen, for using his name, for providing news links at its website, and for charging excessive fees,[141] after which the firm halved the fees, and the court ruled that the links were allowable.[142]

In 2009, Trump was sued by investors in the canceled Trump Ocean Resort Baja Mexico;[143] Trump said he had merely been a spokesperson,[143][144] and he settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount.[145]

In 2004, the Trump Organization licensed the Trump brand to a hotel and condo project in Fort Lauderdalescheduled to open in 2007,[146] but delays in construction and the bursting of the U.S. real estate bubble led Trump to withdraw his name from the deal in 2009,[146] after which the project defaulted, investors sued,[147] and Trump was caught in the ongoing lawsuits because he had participated in advertising.[146][148]

Trump personally guaranteed $40 million to secure a $640 million loan for Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago. When Deutsche Bank tried to collect it, Trump sued the bank for harming the project and his reputation,[149] and the bank then agreed to extend the loan term by five years.[150]

2010s

In 2015, Trump’s claim that the Scottish Government improperly approved a wind-farm project near his golf course and planned hotel was rejected by the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, following a lengthy legal battle.[151]

In July 2015, Trump sued the former Miss PennsylvaniaSheena Monnin, after she alleged that the Miss USA 2012 pageant was rigged.[152] A federal judge upheld the settlement, obliging her to pay Trump $5 million.[152][153][154]

Trump sued Palm Beach County, alleging that the county had pressured the FAA to direct air traffic over Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club and estate.[155] He also sued chefs Geoffrey Zakarian and José Andrés; the latter said there was no merit in Trump’s allegation that the chef backed out of a deal at the Old Post Office Pavilion.[156][157][158][159]

Trump sued the town of Ossining, New York, over the property tax valuation on his golf course there,[160][161] after separately being sued for modifying a drainage system that allegedly damaged a library, public pool, and park facilities.[161]

Summer Zervos, who is one of the women stating that Trump groped her, is suing him for defamation.[162]
