Obama Creates Two National Monument in Southwest

That President Barack Obama has been considering creating a new national monument on Cedar Mesa in southern Utah has been no great secret, but fans of federal public lands were thrilled today when Obama actually went through with it and signed the 1.35-million-acre Bears Ears National Monument in being and also created the 300,000-acre Gold Butte National Monument in Nevada.

“For hundreds of generations,” Obama’s Bears Ears proclamation says, “native peoples lived in the surrounding deep sandstone canyons, desert mesas, and meadow mountaintops, which constitute one of the densest and most significant cultural landscapes in the United States. Abundant rock art, ancient cliff dwellings, ceremonial sites, and countless other artifacts provide an extraordinary archaeological and cultural record that is important to us all, but most notably the land is profoundly sacred to many Native American tribes, including the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah Ouray, Hopi Nation, and Zuni Tribe.”

The national monument will be co-managed by representatives of five tribes—a first.

“I am designating two new national monuments in the desert landscapes of southeastern Utah and southern Nevada to protect some of our country’s most important cultural treasures,” Obama said in a statement released by the White House. “Today’s actions will help protect this cultural legacy and will ensure that future generations are able to enjoy and appreciate these scenic and historic landscapes. Importantly, today I have also established a Bears Ears Commission to ensure that tribal expertise and traditional knowledge help inform the management of the Bears Ears National Monument and help us to best care for its remarkable national treasures.”

Cedar Mesa and the twin buttes of the Bears Ears have exploded in popularity in the last five years, with backpackers, hikers, and ATVers exploring its complex and fragile canyon systems. The area contains an estimated 56,000 archaeological sites and until today was the least protected culturally rich area in the States.

The move was immediately blasted by opponents, including Utah congressional delegation, which gathered at the state capital to present a united front against Bears Ears. Rep. Rob Bishop has been working for years to create what he called a “grand bargain” for the land around Bears Ears, but critics said that his plan was a giveaway to oil and gas interests that would do little to protect the area from development.

“The midnight monument is a slap in the face to the people of Utah,” said Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, “attempting to silence the voices of those who will bear the heavy burden it imposes,” he said, vowing to work with the Trump administration to try to repeal the decision. “It does not have the support of the Governor, a single member of the state’s Congressional delegation, nor any local elected officials or state legislators who represent the area.”

Utah’s Senator Mike Lee said during a December 13 Facebook Live discussion, “I want to make clear, if heaven forbid this does happen, I will work tirelessly with the incoming Trump administration to make sure that this national monument never gets off the ground; to make sure it is undone, that is defunded, unwritten, rewritten, repealed, whatever it is that we have to do to undo it.”

Incoming President-elect Donald Trump certainly could make the new national monuments a low priority, but is unlikely to be able to undo Obama’s action, said Christy Goldfuss, the managing director at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

“The Antiquities Act gives the president the authority to create monuments, but does not provide explicit authority to undo them, and since the Antiquties Act was passed in 1906, both Republican and Democratic presidents have established monuments to protect our rich heritage for historic and scientific wonders. No president has actually undone a monument created by a prior president, and courts at all levels have broadly upheld the president’s authority to designate national monuments under the act.”

Since taking office in 2009, President Obama has created 29 national monuments and set aside or expanded protections for more than 550 million acres of land and water.

An Acai Bowl Is Like a Smoothie You Eat With a Spoon

INGREDIENTS

2 cups (10 1/2 ounces) frozen strawberries

2 frozen sliced bananas

4 tablespoons acai powder

1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice), plus more as needed

2 tablespoons nut or seed butter (I used almond)

1/2 to 1 tablespoon honey, to taste

Toppings :

Fresh fruit, sliced (I used bananas, strawberries, and raspberries)

Bee pollen

Clear, runny honey

Granola (optional)

Unsweetened coconut flakes (optional)

Dried goji berries (optional)

Chia or hemp seeds (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Add the frozen fruits, acai powder, almond milk, nut or seed butter, and honey to a blender. Blend until creamy and smooth, adding extra almond milk as needed to get the blender running. Aim for a frozen-yogurt consistency (it should be thicker than a smoothie).

Spoon the acai mixture into bowls and top with sliced fruit, bee pollen, a drizzle of honey, and the optional toppings (if using).

How to create a museum — wherever you are

How the setting for Slumdog Millionaire became the location for a unique and vibrant pushcart museum.

By 2030, some two billion people — or nearly a quarter of humanity — will be living in informal settlements like Dharavi, the dense and intense home to one million residents in Mumbai, India. As more of the world’s rural poor move to urban centers in search of opportunity, such makeshift neighborhoods will play a major role. But please don’t call them slums, say two Amsterdam-based creative partners: curator Amanda Pinatih and artist Jorge Mañes Rubio, a TED Fellow (TEDxMadrid talk: Souvenirs that reimagine the world around us). “By continuing to call the communities ‘slums,’ these areas and their inhabitants are being cast as a problem to be excluded,” they say, “rather than a group to be supported as part of society’s fabric and future.”

Earlier this year, the pair co-founded a design museum in the heart of Dharavi, which was the setting for the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire. Pinatih and Mañes Rubio wanted to overturn, as they put it, “the western idea of a museum, which tends to be associated with gigantic buildings, star architects and a big dose of glamour and sterilized culture.”

The Design Museum Dharavi became a showcase for local makers’ work, featuring everything from chai cups and bowls (front) to water containers and brooms (rear). Courtesy of Design Museum Dharavi
By contrast, their museum was a gently lit pushcart that opens up into a mini-gallery filled with colorful objects like chai cups, water filters and cricket bats, all created by makers from the community. “We want to use design as a tool to promote social change and innovation, challenging the negative perception of informal settlements and reimagining the museum of the future,” says Mañes Rubio. Here, he and Pinatih give a step-by-step playbook to building a museum that showcases a neighborhood’s vibrant art (and spirit).

Find the person who knows everyone
When Mañes Rubio first went to Dharavi in 2011, he was impressed by the artistry and entrepreneurial spirit of the residents. “Families who had mastered the same craftsmanship for generations lived next door to those who were using modern manufacturing technologies, like laser-cutting,” he recalls. He met Matias Echanove and Rahul Srivastava, co-founders of urbz, an experimental urban research and action collective based in India and South America. Later, they began talking about creating a museum in the settlement, and in early 2016, Mañes Rubio and Pinatih were introduced to Shyam Kanle, who works part-time for urbz.

Born and raised in Dharavi, Kanle comes from a family who have been masters in the crafts of basketry and broom-making for generations. “When walking through the streets with Shyam, you’d think he was a Bollywood star or a well-known politician, because he shakes hands with everybody!” say the founders. “He knows everyone in Dharavi. He helped us find makers to work with and got them to trust us.” More than 60 of the settlement’s artisans, tradespeople and small-business owners ended up as part of the museum.

Make your museum mobile
“One of the most important characteristics of the museum is that it’s nomadic, to cope with the ever-shifting use of space in that dense environment,” say the founders. All over Dharavi, people use pushcarts to sell different goods, resulting in a user-generated market that keeps reinventing itself. “This inspired us to create a pushcart-based, nomadic exhibition space that works both as a venue and as a meeting point for cultural exchange and innovation. Moving from place to place lets the museum interact and engage with different neighborhoods and their communities, too,” they explain. In its nine months, the museum occupied three different sites in the three-square-kilometer area of Dharavi.

Makers were encouraged to rethink their products. One of the results: beautifully hand-carved cricket bats. Courtesy of Design Museum Dharavi
Coax makers to leave their comfort zones
Pinatih and Mañes Rubio wanted to give the makers — who were largely accustomed to making everyday, functional products — the freedom to experiment with their pieces for the museum: “We pushed ourselves and them to think of brand-new products to make using their traditional techniques, of creating new ways to make objects, or of recasting or reforming their products into impossible shapes.” While Design Museum Dharavi was intended to serve as a community showcase rather than as a shop, one beneficial result of the project is that some of the tradespeople have incorporated their new methods and products into what they sell to the public.

The museum held a cricket tournament where the bats got a workout. Dharavi tailors made the players’ shirts, which were also embellished by local embroiderers. Courtesy of Design Museum Dharavi
Encourage aesthetics that reflect local identity
It may not be apparent to visitors quickly passing by, but Dharavi — like most of India — has a vibrant visual culture. “From outside, informal settlements may seem gray and dusty, but inside Dharavi, every corner is decorated in bright colors,” say Mañes Rubio. “This is part of the community’s identity, and we wanted to represent that freedom in the pieces we showed.” For example, water containers are a common household object in Dharavi and are usually red (the color of the clay). So the founders asked the potters to design them as exuberantly as their homes, where doors, courtyards and walls are a riot of hues. “The result were completely new and eye-catching artifacts,” says Mañes Rubio.

By putting pieces like these in the museum, the founders were hoping to give people a different perspective on the settlement, one they might not get by walking through it. “Sometimes visitors would say: ‘I can’t believe these are made in Dharavi!’” say Pinatih and Mañes Rubio. This, in turn, inspired curiosity — and conversations with the makers about their work. “If objects are carefully made, people will get interested in the stories behind them,” they add.

Think about the bigger picture
The museum closed at the end of October, but the founders are trying to turn it into an ongoing, sustainable institution in Dharavi. They’d also like to launch similar initiatives around the world. Of course, they’d be thrilled if other people are inspired to do the same. (They recently published a limited-edition book documenting the project.) Their advice to would-be curators: “Create a museum where the walls are transparent — a museum that encourages a greater diversity, not only in the pieces exhibited but in the audience that it attracts — and make sure it has a socially relevant role in your community.”

This handmade book documented the Dharavi project, including a manual of lessons learned. Courtesy of Design Museum Dharavi
Above all, people brainstorming the museums of the future should not forget the importance of delight. Puzzled at first by Design Museum Dharavi, the children in the settlement eventually came to describe it as “a magic show without the tricks.” Perhaps someday every neighborhood — large and small — will be home to its very own magic show.

JAMB New Marking Scheme 2017 – How JAMB Scores Candidates

JAMB New Marking Scheme 2017 – How JAMB Scores Candidates;

Are you writing JAMB this year?

If your answer is YES, then you should know, the exact method which JAMB uses to mark your scripts and scores you.

JAMB

Are you interested in knowing this? Then, read below.

Here are some questions, frequently ask by JAMBITES:

  • What is the total mark of JAMB?
  • How many points do i need to pass JAMB?
  • How many correct answers do I need to pass JAMB?

We hope that through this article, you’ll be enlighten and have full knowledge on how jamb scores you.

RELATED: Top 13 Things to Do Before Preparing for JAMB – 2017

One of the aims of this article is to refresh JAMBite mind on the fake belief that JAMB Marking Scheme is a scam. You should take note that in the year 2014 & 2015, 70% of jamb candidates, who participated in the JAMB-UTME examination scored below the 180 point aggregate.

JAMB UTME Subjects Combination

Note that the JAMB UTME Examination subject comprises of the following which are listed below:
1: Use of English – Which is mandatory for all candidates.
2: Any three relevant subject – which fully depends on the choice made by the candidates.

You should be aware, that the Use of English is made up of 100 questions.

RELATED: JAMB 2017: How to Answer JAMB Use of English Questions

While the other three subjects, according to Candidates course, is made up of fifty (50) questions each.

Also take note that the JAMB examination is made up of 300 questions.

JAMB Allocated Time

The time frame which is given by JAMB to candidates to answer all the 250 question is: 3 Hours 30 Minutes.

Marks Allotted for Each Subject

You should note that each subject in Jamb examination carries 100 marks, which makes the examination, a total 400 marks for the four (4) subjects (That is, if you answer all the questions correctly)

The truth is that candidates can score as high as 400 over 400. It is very possible to score this, but have you ever seen or heard of anyone scoring as high as 400/400?

Jamb Negative Marking (Do Jamb participates in Negative Marking)

There has been lots of speculation about this issue. Some people are with the notion, while others oppose that the notion of JAMB using negative marking scheme.

What is Negative Marking

In negative marking, if you fail or wrongly answered a question, it will automatically cancel one right answer.

However, we want to make it extra clear here today on this websites, that JAMB does not support Negative Marking. In Jamb, you’re graded with the exact mark you answered correctly.

Glo Increases Interest Rate of “Borrow me Credit” to 15%

And Glo is in the news again!
Barely 24hours after discontinuing its Blackberry Internet Services (B.I.S) (Read HERE if you missed the news), Globacom have decided to break the hearts of its subscribers once again.

In a text message sent to Glo subscribers this afternoon, which reads “Dear customer, Please note the service charge on Borrow me Credit recharge will be revised to 15% starting from 21st Dec. 16.”, Glo alerts subscribers that starting tomorrow, charges on airtime borrow under their “Borrow Me Credit” scheme will attract a service charge of 15%.

In plain and simple terms, any N100 airtime borrowed attracts a N15 service charge. N200 attracts N30, a service charge of N75 follows a N500 airtime loan.
Moving backwards a bit into memory lane, it would be recalled that Etisalat started the 15% service charge trend, Airtel took the baton, now, it is definitely clear in crystal colors that Globacom has followed suit.
Now do we blame this on “Recession” or the need to step up their game? Or just a “copy and paste” game by Globacom?

Pentatonix’s ‘Christmas’ Album Heading for No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart

Vocal group Pentatonix is on course for its second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as industry forecasters suggest the a cappella act’s latest release, the holiday effort A Pentatonix Christmas, could rise to the top of next week’s list. Prognosticators say the album could earn over 175,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Dec. 22. That should be enough to easily take over the top slot, as the next closest competitors will likely be The Weeknd’s Starboy album and Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic, with both albums aiming to earn around 100,000 for the week.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new Jan. 7, 2017-dated Billboard 200 chart — where A Pentatonix Christmas could rise to No. 1 — is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Monday, Dec. 26. (One day later than normal due to the Christmas holiday on Dec. 25.)

A Pentatonix Christmas was released through RCA Records on Oct. 21. It debuted at No. 3 on the Nov. 12-dated chart, and has never ranked lower than No. 6 on the list in its eight weeks on the chart. On the latest tally, reflecting the tracking week ending Dec. 15, it climbed from No. 3 to No. 2 with 156,000 units (up from 128,000 the week previous).

If the album reaches No. 1, it will give Pentatonix its second leader, following their self-titled album, which debuted atop the Nov. 7, 2015-dated list. A Pentatonix Christmas is the group’s sixth top 10 album overall, and third holiday effort to reach the region, following 2014’s No. 2-peaking That’s Christmas To Me, and the 2013 PTXmas EP, which climbed to No. 7.

Next week’s highest new entry on the Billboard 200 looks to be Kid Cudi’s latest release, Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’, which might arrive in the top 10 with over 40,000 units earned.
